- University of North Texas scientists are developing a type of radiotherapeutic bandage, which delivers radiotherapy directly to a squamous cell carcinoma, as reported MSN.
- The researchers presented their work at the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists annual meeting.
- Nanoparticles and electrospinning were used to create the bandage.
- Prior to applying the bandage, the researchers activated radioactive polymers, which were embedded within the fabric.
- The bandages were placed on mice with squamous cell carcinoma for one hour, and on day 15, three out of 10 mice had complete tumour elimination, while the remaining mice had significantly smaller tumours, compared to the control groups.
- The researchers plan to study the technology in larger animals and to explore different doses of radiation.
