FDA clears use of Ortho Dev's knee implants with THINK Surgical's active robot

The FDA has cleared Ortho Development's Balanced Knee system (BKS) and BKS TriMax implants for use with THINK Surgical's TSolution One total knee application, the companies announced Monday. They noted that TSolution One is "the only commercially available active robot system for total knee replacement that supports an open implant library, giving surgeons a choice of implant options."

"We are optimistic about our collaboration with THINK Surgical, and the ability to offer a robotic option…in this expanding area of orthopaedic surgery," remarked Brent Bartholomew, president of Ortho Development, adding that "coupling these [BKS] implants with the TSolution One total knee application adds a unique enabling technology for our flagship products."

TSolution One assists surgeons with optimal joint implant placement based on each patient's unique anatomy. It comprises the TPLAN 3D pre-surgical planning workstation and TCAT active robot, which helps surgeons execute the preoperative surgical plan with automated, hands-free cutting and removal of diseased bone and cartilage. The FDA cleared a second-generation version of the TSolution One total knee application last November.

Meanwhile, Ortho Development said its BKS implants are offered in a range of sizes and options, allowing for "optimal anatomical fit for a variety of patients." The company noted that the system also features a patented locking mechanism to minimise any "micro-motion" between the plastic tibial insert and titanium tibial base plate implants. "Simple and intuitive instrumentation facilitates reproducibility…and aids in proper intraoperative balancing of the knee joint," the company added.
