ResMed subsidiary Propeller Health on Monday unveiled at the ViVE conference new solutions and updates that it says will expand access to its FDA-cleared digital platform. Specifically, the company introduced a new respiratory care solution to enable remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM) by healthcare providers, integrated its platform with multiple electronic health record (EHR) systems and updated its digital platform to enable respiratory care at "home, in-clinic and on-the-go."
Propeller explained that the RTM solution was designed for older patients with chronic respiratory conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, with plans to expand to patients with asthma. The solution may be reimbursable under new Medicare codes added this year (see Spotlight On 2022: How digital therapeutics are surmounting the reimbursement hurdle).
The RTM solution includes a web-based clinician portal to enrol patients with chronic respiratory conditions who could benefit from remote monitoring. It also provides clinicians with insights for ongoing patient monitoring, including data and messaging on medication use and adherence. Patients receive sensors that attach to their inhalers, while a cellular hub automatically collects and transmits medication use data to their healthcare provider. Patients also have access to "actionable insights" through Propeller's web portal or smartphone app.
New integrations with EHR systems
Meanwhile, Propeller's digital platform was integrated with Cerner Millennium EHR as a validated CODE application, and has access to Epic EHR through the company's integration engine powered by Redox. Propeller said these integrations enable "streamlined" workflows and "seamless" transmission of patient data collected by the company and to be made available in the EHR. The integrated experience also allows physicians and clinical staff to enrol and monitor patients on the company's digital platform, receive notifications and adjust treatment accordingly.
Platform updates expand accessibility
Meanwhile, updates to its digital platform include expanded availability of the FDA-cleared Propeller sensor for AstraZeneca's Symbicort inhaler. The company also highlighted improved medication management features in its smartphone app such as tracking for generic drugs and expanded prescription refill options in Propeller's My Pharmacy tool. Further, updates to the company's virtual care team include the addition of high-touch support and coaching shown to "promote improved outcomes such as reduced rescue inhaler use and better retention," it added.
