Aevice's smart wearable stethoscope bags approval in Singapore

Aevice Health on Wednesday announced that regulators in Singapore approved its AeviceMD respiratory monitoring system, making it the first smart wearable stethoscope to be available in the country. CEO Adrian Ang said Aevice will "leverage Singapore's strategic presence in Asia as a medical hub to bring this novel technology into new markets where there is a high prevalence of respiratory diseases."

The system, which attaches to the chest, detects abnormal breath sounds such as wheezing, as well as vital signs including heart rate and respiratory rate. AeviceMD records and plays back chest sounds for remote analysis by healthcare professionals, while its algorithms continuously monitor digital biomarkers to track patient progress over time. The Singapore-based company launched a study of the device in 2021 to detect abnormal lung sounds in paediatric patients.

Cleared for clinical, home settings

The company noted that its wearable stethoscope, which is approved for use in both clinical and home settings, can potentially be used for in-hospital monitoring, hospital-at-home monitoring and remote monitoring. According to Aevice, there is a lack of remote monitoring solutions for chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), adding it aims to identify patients who are at risk of exacerbations early in order to prevent readmissions or emergency room visits.

In 2021, the company raised $2.1 million in a pre-Series A funding round to expand its remote respiratory monitoring solution into Japan.
