Casana announced Monday that it received FDA clearance for its smart toilet seat for in-home health monitoring of heart rate (HR) and oxygen saturation (SpO2). CEO Austin McChord said the decision "is a critical step on our journey to commercialise the Heart Seat."
The Heart Seat, which can replace a standard toilet seat, is intended to be used for measuring, displaying, reviewing and storing non-invasive functional SpO2 and HR data in adults aged 22 years and older with a body weight ranging from 90 lbs to 350 lbs to assist medical teams with remote monitoring of chronic conditions. Embedded sensors in the seat collect data when it is used, and automatically upload them to the Casana Cloud where they can be viewed by the healthcare provider.
Eyeing year-end launch
Casana said it has partnered with researchers to conduct validation studies on HR and SpO2, along with additional clinical measurements. The company plans to file future indications this year, including systolic and diastolic blood pressure, with an initial product market launch targeted for the end of 2023.
